- Abstract:
The article examines the context and intended audience of A.S. Pushkin’s poem “Housewarming,” which is dated “Moscow, 1830” in the author’s autograph. It has become standard practice in Pushkin studies to associate these verses with the purchase by the writer and historian M.P. Pogodin of Prince Tyufyakin’s house on Myasnitskaya Street, especially since Pushkin attended Pogodin’s housewarming in April 1830. However, the author of this article proposes a different interpretation of the poem—as a poetic response to the death on August 20, 1830, of Pushkin’s uncle, Vasily Lvovich, whom the poet-nephew accompanied to his “final housewarming” at the Donskoy Monastery cemetery. The article analyzes the autograph’s place within the collection of Boldino manuscripts, its poetics, and its literary and biographical connections.
