Abstract:

The article discusses the early history of Finnish translations of Russian literature in general and, in particular, a mysterious literary figure of the St. Petersburg newspaper journalism, Mr. Grosswald, who was, according to the newspapers’ small news (1875–1892), highly active in translating Russian literature to Finnish. Apart from this, the mysterious man was claimed to participate in many events, which were actual for the St. Petersburg Finnish life. The article illustrates the contexts of Mr. Grosswald’s “appearances” with the help of the real history of Russian literature in Finland. Mr. Grosswald is considered a mystification.

Keywords: Grosswald, Russian literature in Finland, St. Petersburg newspapers, translation, mystification, E.W. Palander, Julius Krohn, Samuli Suomalainen, Ivan Krylov, Ivan Turgenev, Nikolai Gogol.
