This article reconstructs Iv. Shmelyov’s relationship with V.G. Korolenko and the magazine Russian Wealth (“Russkoye Bogatstvo”): from a rather cool attitude toward the writer’s literary talent to positive assessments of his works and the publication of Shmelyov’s works in the magazine in the 1910s. The reception of his work is reflected in Korolenko’s correspondence with A.G. Gornfeld and letters from editorial board members and staff of “Russkoye Bogatstvo” (S.P. Podyachev, A.V. Peshekhonov, F.D. Kryukov, A.B. Derman, and others), which remain in the archives to this day. The publication history of the story “Under the Sky” in “Russkoye Bogatstvo” is covered in detail. For the first time, Shmelyov’s epistolary legacy is published, either in abridged or in full, including his letters to Korolenko, Gornfeld, and Derman. Shmelyov’s reverence for Korolenko’s moral authority underwent significant changes during his years of exile; this ideological transformation is revealed through an analysis of the writer’s works written in exile.
