D.S. Merezhkowsky and His Posthumous Fight Against Bolshevism: Articles’ Collection “Europe Faces the USSR” (1944)

Abstract:

Posthumous French-language collection of D.S. Merezhkowsky’s anti-Bolshevist essays “Europe Faces the USSR” (1944) is very scarce in book market and remains almost unstudied. Edited and translated by the author’s friend Jean Shuzeville (1886–1974), essayist, translator and ardent anti-Bolshevik, this collection includes texts previously published in Russian language as well as ones known only in French translation. The book also contains two prefaces, one by Shuzeville himself and one by Zinaida Hippius (this also not published in Russian). The present article gives a brief description of texts not published in Russian, raises question of finding out its Russian language originals, and tries to reconstruct whereabouts of this collection’s publishing in Nazi-occupied Paris. After the Second World War the book was banished and remained stock destroyed.
