Abstract:

In the post-revolutionary emigration period, D.S. Merezhkovsky published 65 different texts, originally written in French or versions translated into French. These include texts such as: novels, short stories, articles, essays, plays, collections, appeals, open letters. 111 French reviews, mainly on historical novels were written by French and émigré critics. In the interwar French press, there are 70 articles written about the writer’s life and work or in which he is mentioned along with other authors. Thus, in French periodicals, we can find 181 texts about Merezhkovsky. The linguistic corpus of the first wave of emigration „Merezhkovsky and about Merezhkovsky in French“ contains about 246 different texts. In this paper, we propose to develop the theme of the post-revolutionary cultural heritage of D.S. Merezhkovsky in French in four areas: Jean Chuzeville on D.S. Merezhkovsky, reviews on D.S. Merezhkovsky in French journalism, prefaces to translations of D.S. Merezhkovsky’s works in French and D.S. Merezhkovsky’s articles in the French press. Firstly, the paper analyzes J. Chuzeville’s book „Dmitry Merezhkovsky: a Russian literature sketch“ and his preface to the book „Europe versus the USSR“. As well, some French reviews on Merezhkovsky’s work written by the following authors are studied in this scholarly paper: J. Chuzeville, B. Schloezer, V. Pozner, J. Legras, L. Jalabert, M. Thiébaut and A. Pierre. Then the author of the article analyzes some prefaces to translations in French of D.S. Merezhkovsky’s historical novels, written by their translators: S.M. Persky, D. Roche and E. Halpérine-Kaminsky. Finally, D.S. Merezhkovsky’s French articles from the book „Europe versus the USSR“ („L'Europe face à l'URSS“, 1944) are considered.

Keywords: D.S. Merezhkovsky, emigration, émigré criticism, French periodicals, French translations of the prefaces to Merezhkovsky’s works, Jean Chuzeville, „Europe versus the USSR“, Jesuit Slavic library’s documentary fund.
